2019 Year in Review: BC Race Cars Inc.

Overall, it was an incredible year of racing achievement for a modest team from Cavan, Ontario, both in the professional ranks of Trans-Am racing and at home running the Ontario Championships.                         

Running in the Pirelli GT Sprints, Rob Martin and Mark Busscher were both fully supported by BCR. Both of them had to learn new cars, and finally enjoyed some well-deserved reliability and success on the track. Mark continually improved thru the season and really started to understand the car by mid-year. An unfortunate incident put him out for the balance, but we are super excited about this combination of driver/car for 2020!

Rob Martin’s car was new to him and us, so we both had to learn and understand what it needs. Rob did a great job, always giving us good, calm feedback and that resulted in the fastest lap he has ever done at Mosport, a 1:23.1! Not too shabby for an inexpensive stock car…….He also finished 37 of the 43 available sessions of testing and racing, enjoying fantastic reliability as well. More to come for this combo, some major handling improvements are planned for 2020!

Jim Beaton, piloting the BCR re-built C6 Corvette won the championship in GT-1 again! Jim does a great job driving and maintaining the car, but we feel proud that yet again, a BCR engineered car takes the top step!

In Vintage, Del Bruce carried the flag for BCR with a great 2nd place in the Championship for the VH1 class with his #99 Corvette. Congrats!

In the pro ranks, it was a year of firsts as well; not only did we get our first ever Trans-Am win, we got two! Running a limited number of events, Misha Goikhberg gave us our first win, and also achieved three podiums in 11 races.  Not only is Misha an incredible driver, but he and coach Bob Perona are constantly pushing us to improve and excel! We are ecstatic that they are back with BCR for 2020!

Our second car, the #25 Camaro, also enjoyed great success. Good friend Tony Ave became the second winning driver for BCR. He also scored a second place finish in the three races he entered with us and created many memorable moments (and bent race car pieces) in the process. Luckily, close mutual friend David Jans was there to ease the pain……

The #25 car also had an incredibly talented driver line up in 2019. Ethan Wilson was a great addition to the team, competing in 4 events and achieving a podium and running in the top 6! He should have had two podiums but for a bizarre brake caliper failure at COTA where a win in the West Coast race looked certain


Also driving that car were Aaron Pettipas (who liked it so much they bought the car from us), Kent Vaccario and Peter Klutt. All three did fabulously in their first and only race thur BCR with Aaron finishing 7th while Kent placed 6th! Peter would have also achieved a top 10 as he was running in 6th place when an incident ended his day.

None of this could have happened without the commitment and dedication of our team members, both full time and part time; Andrew Zitman, Blaise Csida, Brian Jeffries, Frank Neilsen, Jeff Porter, John Maloney, John Scrill, Kevin Jones, Martin Lee, Matt Waugh, Michael Morgan, Mike Nelson, Norm Wallace, Penny Knapp, Ralph Nelson, Robert Knapp, Scott Zurrer, Zac Mahoney. Awesome team!

Daytona 2019 Trans-Am Report

The Trans-Am finale for the 2019 season was held at Daytona International, a great place to be where hotels are close, restaurants are plentiful and the weather is usually beautiful.

BCR was fielding two TA2 cars, Misha Goikhberg in our #10 Camaro and a last minute deal put Canadian Peter Klutt (of Legendary Motorcar) in the driver’s seat of our #25 car. Peter is no stranger to Trans-Am and has competed numerous times in the past, but never with us. 

We ran both cars in race trim on the first day of practise, always placing in the top ten. With the series attempt to equalize the different engine manufactures, the restrictions placed on the Chevy LS3 engines was VERY wrong for a track with long straightaways. Unfortunately, the Chevy LS3 equipped cars were simply not competitive at this event. With modern telemetry and Dartfish video, we established that our deficit was 1.2 seconds per lap, which could not  be made up with great handling at a track like Daytona.

So we spent the weekend doing testing, changing set-ups for every session; might as well learn all we can. Both cars were handling fantastic in the race, and as usual, Misha drove superbly and ended up 5th; a great achievement considering the handicap.

Peter had to start last in the race, and quickly made up ground, all the way to 6th position! It was exciting to watch, obviously the car working well and Peter driving great. Unfortunately a multi-car pile-up crashed him out of the race. Definitely a shame, his drive would have made him a strong candidate for the “hard charger” award!

A big thanks to the BCR crew, they were busy this weekend! Repairing cars, changing complete set-ups (we did 3 complete set-up changes with different shocks and springs), and getting it right for the race on both cars!

For Rent #25 TA2 Camaro

BC Race Car’s #25 2018 TA2 Camaro is now available for the 2019 final event at Daytona International Speedway, November 13th to 16th.

During the first six races of this season, with two different drivers, this car has achieved three podium finishes; 3rd, 2nd, and a win at the 2019 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

The BCR #25 car currently holds 7th position in the 2019 Team Championship Standings. It has been raced by 4 drivers for 9 of the 12 events this year and has finished in the top 7 in eight of those events.

This race car is fully adjustable to driver preference.

Frustration at COTA for The BCR Team

It was a weird weekend that started so well and ended so badly for BC Race Cars at the pre-ultimate round of the Trans-Am TA2 race in Texas.

We had a great time all the way thru the weekend, both cars and drivers doing well all thru testing, practise and qualifying. The crew and drivers managed the extreme heat well, and we were looking forward to a great race on Sunday.

Misha Goikhberg, in our #10 Camaro was quick out of the box, 3rd, 1st and 2nd thru testing and practise in this huge 33 car field! He also had a fantastic qualifying session where he put the car in second place, only a 0.1 secs off pole. But the race did not go our way; while we were always in contention, the car was a little free thru the race, and Misha was battling for 3rd place thru the last few laps of the contest. He was passed and re-passed another car. There was some contact and Misha was penalized for “avoidable contact”, which robbed us of a podium finish after the penalty was applied. Of course, we see it as a racing incident.

Ethan Wilson was back in our #25 BCR Camaro. Not having driven a TA2 car since Laguna, he was up to speed quickly, getting used to the car again. As usual, he drove a great weekend, not a scratch on the car.

Ethan was entered in the West Coast championship (a race within the race), and he was easily the quickest in that group. In fact, his qualifying effort earned him a 6th overall, with the car being a little tight. We made some adjustments for the race, and he was leading the West Coast group when a sudden brake failure forced his retirement. Super frustrating as a win was so close!


Off to the final round at Daytona in November!

Unceremonious Podium for BCR @ VIR Sept, 2019

Misha Goikhberg, driving the #10 BCR TA2 Camaro, was the sole runner for BC Racecars at Virginia International for round 11 of the SCCA Pro Trans-Am series.

As usual, we had a lot of fun, but the weekend was far from smooth. We struggled with a loose car all weekend, plus a very unusual clutch failure in first practice. It definitely hampered our customary progress thru the sessions, but we were making gains as numerous changes were made to the car to help our driver.

Misha’s driving talent sure carried the car this weekend, and he was able to qualify 4th, only 0.8 second off the pole. With some last minute changes for the race, we were not hopeful.

In fact, Misha dropped back to 6th early in the race, struggling with race pace. A tap and spin put him even further back, at one point running down in 10th position. But he drove well and made it back to 6th on pure pace.

A mechanical failure of the leading car plus a violent crash in the closing laps promoted us to 4th. Satisfied with a solid result despite not having the best car, we left feeling good. A few days later we were informed that a disqualification resulted in us being 3rd! A podium is a podium, we will take it!

CTMP Report Sept 2019

A milestone performance was the highlight of the weekend, as Rob Martin piloted his #167 Camaro to a best lap time of 1:23.1 during Friday’s test day. The lap time was especially impressive as the car was on used tires and full of fuel.

The lap time exceeded our goal of high 23’s by the end of the season. Rob has worked hard on his driving with some coaching and BCR on getting the car to where it is comfortable to drive.

His consistently fast performance showed all weekend, as he finished 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd for the three races in the Pirelli GT Sprints.  Great results and a step closer to securing a second place in the Championship!

Watkins Glen TA2 Report

BCR competed with 2 cars at the scenic Watkins Glen International, as part of the SCCA Pro Trans-Am series.

Misha Goikhberg was fast out of the box, and we worked hard on race pace all thru testing. We tried different shock valvings and set-ups and were pretty happy with the pace on used tires. Our first “sticker” run resulted in P2 at a 1:51.6 so we felt great about our chances.

Qualifying turned into a disaster (at least by our expectations) as Misha was repeatedly impeded by slow traffic, could not get a flyer in! This placed us 9th, a very disappointing result. We decided to try something completely different, took 4 stickers for the race and the penalty that goes with it: starting in the back of the field.

Misha delivered! By halfway thru the race, he worked his way up to fifth! What an awesome drive. Unfortunately we needed a yellow to close the 15 second gap to the lead pack and fight for a podium, but something failed in the brakes, and we had to retire on lap 24. This ended an 18 month trend for BCR without a mechanical retirement, something we have been very proud of!

Our #25 was piloted by newcomer Kent Vaccaro. With driver coach Josh Hurley’s expertise, each session was better and better and Kent achieved a 5th place qualifying result, way beyond our expectations! Kent comes from the formula world, never having raced a full size tube frame car, which makes this result all the more incredible!

Not knowing what to expect from a 100 mile race, and how the car changes, we changed the set-up slightly for the full fuel load. He drove an amazing race, keeping it clean and making his fastest laps toward the end battling for fifth, finishing in 6th position. Well done for this talented young man at only 17….

Misha & BCR Podium at Road America

Road America hosted round 9 of the SCCA Pro Trans-Am series and the BCR #10 TA2 Camaro with driver Misha Goikhberg achieved another podium in the ultra-competitive TA2 class!

Perfect weather and beautiful landscape marked the entire weekend, and the crew even had time to enjoy the lakeshore and outstanding dining that Sheboygan offers!

Testing went extremely well, Misha posting fastest laps in both sessions. By practise we lost a little on the set-up and qualified 3rd. The race was exciting as Misha battled with the leaders on the initial laps. Tapped from behind, he went off track and lost a lot of time to the top 2, which we could not make up for the reminder of the green flag race. We also battled escalating water temperatures due to grass on the grill, and Misha had to nurse the car home by short shifting and closely monitoring the temperature issues. A great drive from him and a well- deserved podium finish for the entire BCR crew.

A short turn around to make the next race at Watkins Glen will keep us super busy in the next few days…..

Mid-Ohio Trans-Am Report

BCR continues with another solid showing at round 7 of the SCCA Pro Trans-Am TA2 Championship, part of the Nascar Xfinity weekend. With 4 Nascar drivers also trying TA2 competition, the field was exceptionally deep, with 32 cars registered!

Newcomer to the series and BCR, was Aaron Pettipas piloting our #25 TA2 Camaro. Having done a solid day of testing at Shannonville a few weeks prior, Aaron was quick to get up to speed and posted top 10 times all thru practise.   Unfortunately qualifying did not go so well; traffic and unusual circumstances prevented Aaron from getting a clean lap, “only” posting a 12th place.

The race worked out far better, Aaron was able to stay clean and put in a steady performance, running consistent lap times. His efforts were rewarded with a 7th place finish, an exceptional achievement considering the field!

Misha Goikhberg, in the BCR #10 also had a great performance. During practise, we were usually in the top 5, but struggling with understeer which we were not able to completely resolve thru the weekend. Regardless, he managed a 4th place in quali but we knew we were in for a tough race.

Starting on the outside, Misha was forced to concede a number of spots at the beginning, falling all the way back to 7th place. He slowly worked his way back to 5th, his car improving as the race went on. He was fighting hard for 4th place in the last 10 laps, but Mid-Ohio is notoriously difficult to pass on if no mistakes are made. He ended up 5th, another great drive.

Trans-Am/GT1/Supercar up For Sale!

Owner Steve Burns has decided to sell his freshly built Trans-Am/Supercar Mustang as he is pursuing other interests.

Serial #14, this masterpiece took two years to complete and represents the most complex car we have ever built at BC Race Cars. The challenge was to create a state-of-the-art Trans-Am legal race car that can be easily converted to an unlimited category supercar. With the help of AMB aero, a front nose/splitter, undertray and rear wing were commissioned, all of which can be easily changed within a few hours. In this form, the body generates approximately 4 times the downforce of a standard TA car!

In its TA legal form, the car features all the bells and whistles of a front running machine. It is brand new, and the asking price is less than building a new TA car alone!
